Did Hasan say American Jews were “inviting” antisemitic violence?
The attack: coverage and political criticism framed Hasan's remarks
as saying Jewish Americans who support Israel were responsible for, or inviting,
violence against themselves.
What he actually said
During an Aug. 20 livestream, Hasan argued that portraying American Jews as a
monolithic bloc “singularly invested in Israel” was dangerous. He warned that if
this idea continued to be promoted, someone could eventually direct violence at
American Jews rather than at the Israeli state.
Why it became controversial
Critics, including Democratic politicians, interpreted the warning as blaming
Jewish people for antisemitic violence. Hasan's defence was that he was warning
against rhetoric that conflates Jewish identity with the Israeli government,
not endorsing or excusing violence. Because the underlying words are real and
the dispute is over their meaning, this entry is not labelled a fabricated quote
or deceptive edit.
The attack: a political video presented a series of clipped remarks
as evidence that Hasan wanted America to “resume lynchings against Black people.”
What the source footage shows
The most inflammatory line was not Hasan stating his own position. He was reading
and mocking a racist comment from chat before condemning it. Removing the setup
made the quotation appear to be his own argument.
Independent verification
